One Room Challenge Week 5: Drywall, Floors and More!

It’s WEEK FIVE of the Spring 2021 One Room Challenge and our bathroom is finally starting to look like a room again!

After several weeks of being stuck in limbo waiting for the best time to finish the demo of our bathroom, we finally ripped out the tub and shower surround over the Memorial Day weekend. We took several days off of work to get as much work done as possible and we really had our work cut out for us. Every step of the way we were met with more delays. It was definitely not a great feeling coming into this week still without a working tub or shower.

Our biggest hiccup was with our floors. See that picture below? That is where our toilet was situated. There was enough water damage to the subfloor that we could stick our fist through it. On top of that, when we removed the old mortar bed and tile we needed to account for the height difference for the drain above the floor. It took the better part of a day to figure out how to re-plumb our old cast iron pipe to pvc and then an additional day to remove the old subfloor and lay a new OSB subfloor.

So here we are, week 5 and our room is not quite half-way there. To say we are a little stressed about it would be an understatement. We have taken the pressure off of ourselves to complete the challenge and are focusing on getting things done right on our own timeline.

Drywall is finally up and we have installed the new tub + drain. Next on our list is to finish plumbing for the tub and shower fixtures and then to finish installing the tile backer with the goal to start tiling this upcoming weekend. It’s ambitious but I don’t think we can go another week without a shower.

Check back next week for a peek at the room progress! For more updates throughout the week be sure to follow along on Instagram and don’t forget to check out the progress of each of the Featured Designers and Guest Participants spaces.
